Texas Health and Human Services operates state-supported living centers (SSLCs) across 13 locations, including Abilene, Austin, Brenham, Corpus Christi, Denton, El Paso, Lubbock, Lufkin, Mexia, Richmond, Rio Grande, San Angelo, and San Antonio. These centers provide campus-based services and support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The centers are specifically designed to assist those who are medically fragile, face behavioral challenges, or have mental health issues. Admission to an SSLC begins with contacting a local intellectual and developmental disability authority. If eligible, one can apply for voluntary admission, court commitment, respite, or emergency admission based on specific needs. The centers are closely monitored, with evaluations conducted every nine months to ensure quality of care. These evaluations encompass a settlement agreement with the Department of Justice for continuous improvement in services.
