The Altenheim, meaning "Elder’s Home," is a senior residence situated on a six-acre campus in Oakland’s Dimond district. Established in the 1890s by immigrants from German-speaking countries, the property features structures largely dating from the 1910s. It carries historical significance, evidenced by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places and its receipt of the 2007 Partners in Preservation Award from the Oakland Heritage Alliance. The community offers affordable modern apartments for low-income seniors through its historic rehabilitation project, which also preserved the cultural legacy of the area. Phase 1 of the project renovated the existing structures, creating 93 new apartments with full kitchens and baths, and restoring over 10,000 square feet of common areas. These include a two-story rotunda with a lobby, music lounge, library, and offices; a large dining hall with painted beams; a smaller community room known as Prior Hall; and two solaria for quiet lounging and gatherings. The second phase added 81 senior apartments, 28 of which are reserved for seniors with disabilities who are currently experiencing homelessness or at risk of it. The Altenheim is located at 1720 MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, California. The community spans a six-acre campus, offering a beautiful three-acre garden as part of its historic setting. The Altenheim has been designed to provide a modern living experience while honoring its historical roots. It offers low-income seniors access to affordable housing within its 93 apartments, combining the charm of historic architecture with modern amenities. The larger dining hall, smaller community room, and solaria provide ample space for residents to gather.
